crescent-moon-orange
Harvest Crescent Moon

These moons are a nod to the the old-fashioned witch balls that traditionally hung in windows to protect a home from disruptive nature spirits. In folklore, wayward entities would enter objects by their eyes and make a home within them. Our moons hang from a blue velvet ribbon with a small brass bell (as a household can never have enough bells for protection!) and are the all knowing moons of fairy tales.

This moon represents the Harvest Moon of September which is spiritually linked with gratitude, fulfilment and transition. It marks the culmination of the growing season, it rises just after sunset and that extra bit of light helped the farmers when gathering in their crops for the final harvest. It's often the time of year that the moon looks its largest, giving the optical 'moon illusion' as it comes up over the horizon. When coming straight from the horizon it often has a peach coloured haze as the sun reflects on its surface. Romani women would sometimes whisper messages through their curled over right hand to be taken to their loved ones who were far away.

These moons are painstakingly difficult to make, mostly because ceramics have to be hollow. Creating their shape without collapsing them is character-building and often a futile endeavour but we would never use a mould when making a piece of this magical nature; they must each be unique to give them their own personalities don't you know?!

Being hollow doesn't make them lightweight though. They're made of stoneware clay so could do a mischief if hooks aren't attached securely into wood or plaster work, and best not to place them directly over someone's head for obvious reasons!

We see our moons as very British dream catchers with a folk art vibe. They are made from scratch using stoneware clay, fired twice and decorated with underglazes, pigments and a transparent glaze used to highlight eyes, mouths and craters.

Weight: 660g

Height: 19cm

Width: 16cm

PLEASE NOTE: Because of technical reasons, colours may appear different on your screen.
