This little lady is made by hand in stoneware clay, one of a kind, no moulds used. She is carved with the triskele, an ancient motif featuring three interlocked spirals which symbolises motion, the power of three and the eternal cycle of life. The earliest known European examples of this date back over 5,000 years to Neolithic stone carvings at sites like Newgrange in Ireland. The spiral symbol on her hat represents the force that is life, change, learning and the mortal coil.

She has a small pouch on her back for an offering you may wish to give her. She’s been created with the same intentions as the Slavic Domovoi / Ukrainian Motanka figures, which are to watch over the hearth, bring peace and ward off negative energy. In more British traditions of folk magic, she is similar to protection poppets traditionally made of cloth or clay, where herbs or messages of written intentions are placed into her pouch to protect the home and inhabitants from ill-wishers. She has been fired twice, her face highlighted in mason stains and glazes, and her body washed with copper oxide to highlight the carvings, before being covered in a matte white glaze (which reacts with the oxide) that has been hand-painted on to give a rustic and aged feel.
