These hearth totems are representative of tutelary guardians (i.e. patrons) or protectors of a particular place; in this case, the heart of the home. The etymology of tutelary expresses the concept of safety and therefore guardianship. This piece is made in an iron-rich black clay. Iron is seen as having protective properties in many strands of folk-based magic. Each guardian has their own protection sigil carved into them that is then inlaid with a white slip, the very act of carving into the piece magnifying the intent of protection. It is fired first at 1000C, then the entire body is coated in a thick layer of copper oxide, a material believed to amplify magical intent in folk belief systems. The copper thus reacts with the surface of the clay and gives an aged and worn look to these little beings.
