Sgraffito Moon Spirit Red

These little beings are representations of the nature spirits that reside in our hedgerows and gardens. They are anthropomorphic in nature (as many of our works are) but with a determination to capture something of the inexplicable ‘other’ about them too. Each piece has an individual face unique to itself, never made from a mould; I mean how could you tell them apart otherwise? Every spirit has a highly decorated botanical spiral pattern carved into the body using a technique called sgraffito. It entails carving away the patterns in the underglaze so that it creates a form of relief work. It is a slow, precise task but worth the time as it really pops with such clean sharp lines that are raised from the surface, giving the piece a tactile quality.

They are fired twice, the first to 1000C and the second to 1160C over a total of four days. The face is created by building up mason stains on the surface, highlighted with a clear glaze, the body underglazed, carved, and then finally a transparent glaze applied to the rest of the body.
