This melancholy harlequin (or jester) sculpture was inspired by Picasso's blue and rose periods. It's believed his harlequins and their travelling companions were meant to represent him and his fellow artists cohorts, who he saw as living life as outsiders, on the fringes of society like the travelling circus communities.
This piece sits on a shelf with his legs dangling. He is created in stoneware and follows a traditional harlequin aesthetic. He is completely hand made and one of a kind, no moulds are used in his making process and each square and inlay are glazed and inlaid by hand. The hand made nature of him means there are going to be some small imperfections on him, as is the nature of his creation process.
