This deer guardian has open eyes to represent an extrospective mindset. Each piece is individually handmade and finished with an ancient, reactive copper glaze. This gives them a stunningly rich surface due to slow cooling after the final firing, all with their own carved-in protection sigil. Deers are symbolically connected to the supernatural, the otherworld, and the fairy realm. They are often portrayed as messengers and familiars. In various Celtic tales, the deer is seen as the cattle of the fae, tended to by tutelary spirits who can shapeshift into one. They have close associations with Elen of the Way, the Cailleach Bhéara, Oisín (meaning ‘young deer’) and Sadhbh (his mother) and of course Cernunnos with his stag antlers, symbols of virility and his associations with the wild hunt.
