Decarabia, 69th spirit in the lesser key of Solomon. 

I can’t lie, I have never been more nervous of making a piece than this one. I worried I might insult the spirit and wasn’t sure I was equipped to take on the task of visualising. I’m so glad I did though, it was certainly an eye opening learning experience. I was given some good guidance from a friend and the process taught me so much and made it less overwhelming …. I’ve since learnt it’s highly improbable that I’m the right person to honour all 72 demons! 

Decarabia is known for his knowledge of herbs and precious stones, and as I use plants and (semi) precious stones in my craft, it was a start that I could relate to. The experience was something I find hard to put into words, but it was an obsessive process, and as the image formed I found I couldn’t switch off from him until he was completed. 

His symbolism and sigil are woven into the piece. Those who know their sigils will be able to read the markings upon him. He is a one of a kind, I don’t think there is anything remotely similar out there today.  He is blackstone ware and decorated with underglazes and a bronze metallic glaze.  When glazing on black stoneware the material absorbs so much of the glaze into its body that it gives the effect of great aging, as if the piece has been dug from the ground. Parts of the body retain the glaze in the nooks and crannies, and where the glaze has been absorbed there is a slight metallic glint that shimmers in the right light.
