These hug mugs are definitely not to be found on the highstreet, and can only be made in tiny batches due to the amount of work that goes into each one.
Each piece's body is hand thrown on the potters wheel. The following day handles are made first thing, set to one side then applied much later in the day. A unique moon face is created for each piece (never using a mould) then this is carefully attached onto the surface of each mug mug. After these processes a small handmade moon gazing hare is made to go on the inside of each mug. The mug is then left to slowly dry over at least two weeks prior to firing at 1000C. If it survives the firing each moon is painted in pigment, and their eyes are hand painted in then a transparent glaze is applied to eyes and lips. The body of the mug is then painted with four different glazes, each applied twice, so that they chemically react with one another to create a night sky effect, then tiny dots of underglaze are added to create a starry sky affect, after which the hare is glazed in yet another glaze and added to the base of the cup where it fuses to the bottom of each mug during the next firing which is at 1160C and takes over two days to complete.
As we said, you wont find these on the high street. Not many makers are daft enough to put in this many hours to make a mug. Even if we say so ourselves, they are a bit good aren't they? They come boxed within a box to make gifting easier.
