Lancashire Sunshine with Eye of Ra Hanging Decoration

These Suns were inspired by the Lancashire Sunshine in all its glory, on the few occasions in the year we actually get to see him.  Each sun is cut out, and underglazed in white before being fired at 1000c, it is then carefully hand painted in pigment on the front with the sun's face, and on the back with the Eye of Ra, which is a symbol that is considered to function as an extension of the Egyptian Sun God Ra's powers, and is invoked to protect the household to which the decoration belongs. The painted image is then scratched into to give the impression of an old fashioned etching. Each face is slightly different and picked at random.

The decoration is finally glazed  both sides then fired again at 1160c in the kiln on small ceramic stilts so that it can be glazed on both sides.  There are small indents in the glaze on the Eye of Ra side where the stilts are removed after the firing and there is some slight movement in the ceramic as it is propped up on stilts during firing, which means there can be slight movement in the ceramic and the art work underneath due to the glaze and firing process which adds to the handmade, folk art charm of each piece.  Each piece comes with a brass bell for protection and blue velvet ribbon and with its own box for ease of gifting.  The time, intent and detail in each of these pieces makes them ideal to hang as either a Yule tree decoration, or as a protection charm for the home.
