These light beings came in a dream and haven't really left. I had been looking at Leonora Carrington's art work the night before. With Leonora being a Lancashire lass too, it seemed only manners to re-create an essence of what I'd seen in this odd little world I'd visited, to see if it made any sense, and I think it did ?!? Like a lot of us I'd always felt the presence of an 'astral plane' without ever having heard the words or concepts before, I believe these are an expression of this liminal world.
I see these beings (or nuummies as we like to call them) as protective guardians of the spirit world, and when they're being carved I go into a kind of trance until they're finished. No two will ever be the same, though many of the patterns reoccur throughout the work I do because the carvings have become a kind of personal language. The marks carved into them have their origins in Icelandic staves and Slavic embroidery tattoo's, but if you look closely you can start to see very similar patterns in other cultures traditional patterns. All of the markings I use are based around a personal approach to amulet making.
These pieces are folk art and are hand made from start to finish, so they all have the marks and makings of this process, they can not be mass produced, just made in tiny batches from time to time, each with their own personality.
