This vessel was created to honour the Oak King and the turning of the year. It's body is highly decorated with oak leaves, ivy, acorns, each one cut and decorated by hand. On one side of the vessel depicts the oak king in his prime, the other a skull symbolising the memento mori aspects of his myth.
The bottle is glazed in a matt matcha shino glaze that was fired at 1180c for 48 hours to gives the piece a timeless yet ancient feel, and draws out the incredible texture and patterns of the work that was days in the making. In order to acknowledge the memento mori aspect of the piece the king's skull has been left unglazed, a constant reminder of our mortality.
This is a statement piece and nothing of its kind can be seen on the market today. It harks back to folk traditions and folk beliefs and is equally at home for ornamentation or as a ritual piece.
