Melusine / Water Elemental Plaque

No she's not a mermaid, she's the far rarer Melusine and this plaque was created to honour the element of water in the witches compass of fire air earth and water. She was initially pressed into a mould we made which helps to distribute the clay into correct areas on the plaque, then details of her face hair scales etc are completely re worked using fingers and hand tools to ensure every piece is completely unique as well as time consuming. 

Her features are highlighted using iron oxide, and her surround has been glazed using a traditional shino glaze to keep the piece feeling rustic and aged.  Once this process is complete we carefully add broken blue glass into the background and fire her a second time. Due to the shrinkage of glass and ceramic having different rates the glass then cracks within the piece to give this amazing crackle glazed affect.  

She is a real folk heart piece created to be rustic, and has a plate hanger attached to her back so she can be wall mounted.
