Tarot Nuummie The Fool

This magical creature was inspired by the fool in the Rider Waite tarot deck, probably the most popular deck with over a 100 million copies of it thought to have been put into circulation since it was first published by the rider company in 1909.  The deck was based on the instructions of academic and mystic A E Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith who were both members of the Hermetic order of the Golden Dawn. 

As the colour scheme was taken from the first card in the deck we though what could symbolise our fates in this life better than the spiral and lets face it who doesn't love a good spiral?  Spirals and Labyrinths are things that we repeat over again in our work.  There is something unadulteratedly primal in their form symbolising life and the mortal coil, and also portal like, and what magical thinker isn't fascinated by portals?

This sweet little Nuummie was originally underglazed in black, then using a technique called sgraffito, a spiral was carved into her form free hand both on the front and back.  We then we glazed into the carved area using a swirling combination of the colours from The Fool card. The sharp line created by the sgraffito juxtaposed by these colours allows them to pop, and creates a show stopping creation that pops with colour and joyful energy.  We see them as a guardian of the betwixt and between, a sort of Nuummie fortune teller.

They are very good natured, and like all of our work, completely handmade with a true folk art heart.
