These ceramic bells are adorned with a protective eye symbol that is traditionally associated with repelling the evil eye back to those who cast it. The symbol is more often than not seen as an apotropaic charm to ward off the envious glances an individual might receive, intentional or not. Charms of this nature have been used across the globe for at least 5,000 years. On the back of the bell is another ancient symbol, the solar cross, thought to have first been depicted 12,000 years ago. It represents the might of the sun and to many has come to represent the wheel of the year. Bells are also often connected with protection charms for people’s homes.
This item has been made of black clay that has then been coated with a thick, uneven white-slip which gives the piece an aged look, cracking and thinning in places to allow the black to seep through. The symbols have then been heavily carved into the bells so that the details are highlighted by the black clay and stand out. The eye has been underglazed in a reimagined 1970’s pallet of brown, orange, red and yellow, then fired to 1000C before being glazed in a clear glass-type layer to protect the colours from the elements and hung from a thick, rough hemp rope, adding to the rustic, handmade feel. Due to being glazed all over, they are fired on ceramic stilts which leave small imperfections on their surface. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
