Sgraffito Unicorn Bowl

This hand-built sgraffito bowl was influenced by medieval unicorn depictions found in  bestiaries and on tapestries.  It is not a rainbow, winged unicorn that should be in our humble opinion be deemed a  treasonable offence ;).

The bowl is hand built in clay, then under glaze is applied over its still damp surface.  It is left to dry slightly, then the image's outline is carved away using sgraffito tools to create a clean sharp image than stands slightly proud of the piece.  The outside of the bowl portrays a forest around its edges, and the unicorn is framed in a crown of thorns, everything very much portrayed in a handmade folk art style that cannot be mass produced in the production process.
