These pieces are made in stoneware ceramics and have been glazed in shinos, underglazes, gloss glazes, fired twice and completely handmade from scratch.
They’ve been inspired by a hodgepodge of sources ranging from the British folk traditions of May Day, Harvests, Mumming and Morris to name but a few, with their Osses and Oosers, straw bears and Green Men to the European Wilder Mann traditions (which have been beautifully documented by the work of Charles Fréger in his book, Wilder Mann). The magical instruments are again inspired by this ‘other’ that humans seek and were based upon the work of Devonshire Cunning Man, Mark the Wand who is a traditional wand and tool maker.
These pieces are an attempt to express the animistic elements of folk traditions, not based on existing masks. They explore the need in some of us to delve into that metamorphic aspect of spirit so that we can become as one with the anima loci of our landscape. When studying the anthropological nature of these masked traditions, it becomes clear that true folk customs across the globe have more similarities than differences.
Unlike our other work, these intentionally have no eyes as the wearer is no longer present within themselves but has instead become part of the landscape they roam... and just for the record, they also make nice spirit houses if you are inclined to believe in such things!
