Sun Totem

These sun totems are inspired by the folk art motifs that were used in quilting and the Pennsylvanian Germanic immigrant decoration traditions. This was where European symbolic motifs were blended with themes of creation, life and love, channelled into the art they made for their homes once they came to the 'New World'.

This piece is individually made of buff stoneware clay and fired twice very slowly in our kiln, Mordor, to temperatures of 1180C. Her face is sculpted by hand (no mould or template used) so that she has her own personality and expression, her features are highlighted with mason stains and underglazes in our signature face style, and then her eyes and lips are overglazed to give them the shine that animates her. Her body is glazed in a very rustic and drippy matte turquoise and her heart motif then uses a transparent underglaze to make it shiny against the matte. On her back a small pocket has been created so that you can pop in an offering to thank her or ask for a bountiful harvest.
