Witch Hangings

These witches are cut by hand (no cutter, just a blade) and dried overnight between weights so they fire flat. They are then underglazed in black, carved into using a sgraffito technique, fired to a thousand degrees, then covered in a transparent glaze and fired again at 1180C—a slow, steady process.

These ladies are based on the images from The History of Witches and Wizards: Giving a True Account of All Their Tryals in England, Scotland, Swedeland, France, and New England, dated 1720. The stereotype of witches on brooms with pointy hats was cemented during this era and, due to increased interest in witchcraft as of late, this book has been recently republished with all 57 of its woodcuts. They come in three different sizes, just in case you fancy a spin on Hilder Ogden’s flying ducks up your wall, or you can purchase them individually if you’d prefer. All will be slightly unique due to the nature of their making but they are all based upon the same design.
